Possible Causes of Poorly Functioning Dishwashers, Part 1

Whether you live on your own, have a large family or are somewhere in between, a properly functioning dishwasher is a must in any modern home. Dishwashers that are not cleaning well for any reason can lead to several issues, from basic hassle to long-term problems with your dishwasher, expensive repairs and, potentially, earlier dishwasher replacement than you would have planned on.

At All Pro Appliance Service, we’re proud to offer a variety of appliance repair services, including detailed dishwasher repair solutions for any problem yours might be dealing with. In this two part blog, we’ll go over some of the potential causes of a dishwasher that isn’t cleaning properly, plus what can be done about them – either on your own or with the assistance of our appliance repair professionals.

Interior Accumulation

Over a period of time, it’s possible for several buildups to accumulate on the interior areas of your dishwasher. Such buildups could include grease, minerals, soap scum, tiny pieces of food, or combinations therein.

If you have begun to notice that dishes aren’t getting clean, then, the first step is often to simply clean the interior. First, run a vinegar cycle where you pour three cups of white vinegar into the bottom and run a full cycle. If this does not work, call our pros about additional cleaning tips.

Filter Issues

If you have an older dishwasher manufactured before roughly 2010, chances are it comes with a self-cleaning filter. More recent models, however, have removable filters you have to remove and clean every so often, usually located below the racks below a twist-off cap. If you have one of these newer models and have not cleaned your filter in a while, this could be the cause of unclean dishes.

Soap Dispenser Malfunction

Your dishwasher needs detergent to properly clean your dishes – and more than just needing it, it needs it to be released at the proper time. This is the job of the soap dispenser, but there may be cases where the spring on this dispenser door is damaged or some other malfunction has taken place.

To remedy this, you can attempt to use a small brush to clean the dispenser and its springs. You might also consider hot water and vinegar to dissolve any clogs in the dispenser. If the gasket around your dispenser is cracked, on the other hand, call our team bout replacing it.

Clogged Spray Arm

Within a dishwasher, the spray arm is the component in charge of spinning around above and/or below the dishes, shooting water onto them as part of the washing cycle. However, the small holes in the spray arms in your dishwasher can become clogged, reducing water pressure and limiting cleaning quality. Some models have spray arms that easily detach for cleaning, while others might involve more detailed needs that our team will assist you with.
