Like with many other home appliances, there are a few things you can do as a homeowner on a regular basis to maintain ovens so they don’t wear down as quickly and continue to provide value for many years. The right approach to basic oven upkeep regularly adds years to your machine’s lifespan. In this two-part blog series, we’ll go over several oven maintenance tips we can offer to keep your oven in tip-top shape and reduce the need for expensive repairs or replacement.
Regular Cleaning
First and foremost, particularly if your oven gets regular use in the home, it’s vital to ensure it’s cleaned properly on a regular basis. Various buildups that take place over time – things like gunk, grime and oils – will wear down your oven’s efficiency, making it less accurate for temperature, less efficient and, most importantly, less safe.
Much of cleaning here comes down to daily tasks like wiping up spills or buildups when you’re finished cooking. You should also perform a more thorough cleaning at least a few times per year.
Self-Cleaning Tips
Down similar lines, how often should you be using the self-cleaning mode in your oven? Our general answer: Generally only once or twice a year, if that. Using this feature too often may damage certain components or lead to poor odors in your kitchen that are very tough to get rid of. When this feature is done working, wait six hours and then unplug the oven and wipe it down with a solution of white vinegar and water.
Liquid and Knobs
Both while cleaning and during normal use of the oven, be sure to avoid liquids getting behind your knobs or in any other area of the oven with electrical connections. These can seep in and cause electrical shorts, which will in turn require wire replacements or other fixes. For cleaning these areas, instead use a dry microfiber cloth or a rag that’s been sprayed in advance.
Range Burner Upgrades
One of the most obvious signs of wear-and-tear or damage to the oven is the range burners, which may show spots, blemishes or even burn areas. These risk damage to the burners and your cooking components as you use them, plus can pose safety risks – and furthermore, they create more expensive repair situations the longer they’re allowed to remain. When issues with burners begin to show up, be sure to replace them quickly.
