While many of the appliances in your home are built to last for years, they may eventually wear down and require replacement. At this point, what happens to the old appliance that’s being replaced?

When a given part is being replaced, it should not simply be thrown out – this two-part blog will go over several of the resources available for donating used appliance items, allowing you to avoid waste and put your previous appliances to legitimately good use.
Salvation Army
One of the most familiar donation resources for a wide variety of items and products is the Salvation Army Family Stores group, which has been serving this area for decades and is a well-known name. Home appliances are just one tiny piece of the possible item range you can donate to Salvation Army, which also includes everything from clothing to airline miles, car donations and numerous other areas, which you can find out more about by browsing their site.
One note on donating appliances to Salvation Army: Not all items are accepted at every location, so you should call in advance to confirm they accept your item. You may also be able to schedule a pickup in many cases. This is enormously beneficial not only to others, but also to business owners who will often receive tax deductions based on these donations.
Habitat for Humanity
Another great resource you’ve likely heard of in this area is Habitat for Humanity, which offers numerous Habitat ReStores throughout the country. These are independently-owned reuse stores run by local Habitat for Humanity organizations, accepting donations and selling them to the public for a tiny percentage of the initial cost.
Like Salvation Army, many such stores will offer free pickup for large items if they’re located in your area. Habitat for Humanity will generally accept both new or lightly-used appliances donated.
Goodwill Industries
Having trouble finding a location for one of the two outlets we listed above? Be sure to check Goodwill Industries, which boasts over 7,000 locations around the country and will almost certainly be present somewhere near you. They have simple online tools for finding the location nearest to you.
One important note: Goodwill does not necessarily accept all appliances, and larger ones in particular may not be accepted. Call in advance to ask about which smaller appliances are likely to be approved for donation.
