As longtime Utah residents are well aware, it gets extremely hot here during the dead of summer. Residents everywhere are looking to prepare their HVAC systems for this reality, and the top area to be considering within this realm is your air conditioner.

What are some of the key areas to be focused on here, whether on your own or with help from our team of experts? This two-part blog series will go over several themes to keep in mind.
Filters, Filters, Filters
Few elements that you have control over as a homeowner are more important to the function of your air conditioner than the filters. As you may know, these work to clean the air within your home while also helping your unit to run more efficiently. Over time, they become clogged with dirt, dust and other debris – which is why it’s important to check them on a regular basis (we recommend monthly).
You can clean most filters yourself with relative ease, but some will need to be replaced. We’re happy to take a look and let you know which category your unit falls into.
Be Safe
If you’re attempting to do any kind of work on your actual air conditioning unit itself, even if the work seems pretty simply, safety is the most important factor. Be sure to turn off your circuit breaker that provides power to the unit before beginning any work, and always make sure that you consult with an expert if you’re feeling unsure about something.
Clean the Coils
Over the last several months and during the prior winter, your air conditioner’s coils have likely become caked with all sorts of dirt and debris. This is something that will need to be cleaned on a regular basis in order for your unit to function properly, and it’s not uncommon for this work to need to be done more than once per year.
In general, it’s best to leave coil cleaning to the professionals. However, if you’re feeling up to the task, you can do it yourself with a few basic supplies. First, you’ll need to locate the coils (usually on the back of the unit). Once they’re located, use a garden hose to spray them down and remove any loose dirt or debris.
After that, you’ll need a coil-cleaning solution, which can be purchased at most hardware stores. Be sure to follow the instructions on the packaging carefully, as misuse of these products can cause serious damage to your unit.
